Leeton Accommodation
With a population of 6,828, Leeton is a thriving town offering visitors a wide variety of experiences in the heart of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area (MIA), one of the richest food producing areas of Australia. Leeton's history dates back to the early 1900s when wealthy Irish landholder, Sir Samuel McCaughey demonstrated that irrigation was possible in this relatively arid area of the state. His success led Government to begin construction of a giant irrigation scheme in 1906, and on the 13th July 1912, the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area was officially opened. Leeton was designed by American architect Walter Burley Griffin, and was named after Charles Alfred Lee, the NSW minister for Public Works when the Irrigation Scheme was developed.
