With a population of 3,961, Narrandera is a town located at the heart of the NSW Riverina. Known for its tree-lined streets and gracious old buildings, it is listed as an urban conservation area by the National Trust. Settlement of the area began soon after Captain Charles Sturt glowingly described the landscape after his epic journey alongside the Murrumbidgee in 1829. The town began as a river crossing for the famed 'overlanders' as they moved cattle from the far north of Australia to the goldfields in Victoria. Timber milling and brewing were important early industries with river boats and then rail providing important links to city ports.
