a population of 8,430, Cowra is 152km North East
of Temora. A historic town on the Lachlan River renowned
for its food, wine and the role it played in World War
II.
Cowra was established in 1849, and has experienced steady growth since then. On August 5, 1944 the largest modern military history occurred at Cowra. More than 1000 Japanese prisoners launched a mass suicide attack on their guards, Australian soldiers of the 22nd Garrison. A total of 107 POW's were wounded, 231 prisoners died along with four Australian soldiers.
