Aircraft Showcase
After arriving home from the Australian International Airshow in Victoria, all of us here at the Museum have turned our focus to our Aircraft Showcase program coming up this weekend which will feature the Spitfire and the Museum’s trainers, Ryan and Tiger Moth.

The current high pressure system over this region has been producing some glorious weather and this Saturday will be no exception. It is sure to be a perfect day for flying in these open cockpit trainers and the Supermarine Spitfire.
Gates open at 10am.

 Avalon
The Temora Aviation Museum would like to thank everyone involved in ensuring a successful campaign for the Australian International Airshow 2013. The Museum’s Meteor, Hudson, Spitfire Mk VIII, Boomerang and the RAAF Sabre all took part in this extraordinary bi-annual airshow which was held on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd of March attracting over 180,000 visitors.

Our Warbirds were a popular attraction both on the ground and in the air as they performed some of the most incredible formation flying ever seen in this country. Avalon 2013 provided a great opportunity for the Museum to showcase the historically significant collection of aircraft as well as promoting to aviation enthusiasts the benefits of a visit to the Museum.

If you were at the Airshow and visited our promotions trailer, you may have been lucky enough to enter your name in the draw for free tickets to the Warbirds Downunder 2013 which is to be held on the 2nd November here at Temora. The winners of these general admission tickets were Michael Basins, Jayden Boyde, Tony Brook, Andrew Bevan, Reg Hough, Frank Robinson, Kevin Schramm, Mike Schaffer, Mark Tyzzer and Jesse Oweng. Congratulations to you all. We will be in contact with you soon with all of the details and we look forward to seeing you on 2nd November.

Warbirds Downunder 2013
Now is the time to mark the 2nd November in your calendar and plan your trip for Warbirds Downunder 2013. Plans are well underway for an action packed flying program as well as displays on the ground. It is hoped the flying program will be even bigger than 2011 when over 50 sorties were flown during this single day airshow.

Squadron Tent City
Accommodation in Temora during Airshows can be difficult to get – so this year we are trialling another option for those who would like to stay at the airfield and avoid the traffic when arriving and leaving the Airshow on the day.

New in 2013, the Squadron Tent Barracks is a temporary on-site accommodation facility consisting of cabin style tents tall enough to stand up in. Each tent will be set up before you arrive and feature an awning, internal lighting, carpet on the floor, camp style beds and roll up screened windows – all you need to bring is your linen (sleeping bag and pillow), towels, camping chairs and personal items!

The beds are camp style stretcher beds that come complete with a mattress which will ensure both a good night’s rest, and adequate storage room under your bed for your camping essentials. For more details and bookings **Click Here**

Warbirds Downunder 2011

The inaugural Warbirds Downunder 2011 Airshow was a huge success. Despite the unseasonable heat and dust the day was enjoyed by a huge crowd of visitors, pilots and aircraft owners.

Firstly we must say thank you to all those who brought their aircraft to Temora to participate in the historic lineup of flying displays. All up we had 53 aircraft take part in the flying which ran on time and flawlessly. Without the genorosity of other aircraft owners, an event of this scale would not be possible.

Secondly we want to thank you, our visitors, for attending the Warbirds Downunder Airshow. We know you put alot of time and effort into travelling to Temora but it is seeing the enjoyment that you get from watching history come alive that encourages us to keep going and make the events better each time.

Lastly, we want to acknowledge the staff, crew and volunteers who spent countless hours preparing for and cleaning up after Warbirds Downunder 2011. This airshow was undoubtably our biggest challenge to date and your dedication and effort are greatly appreciated.

We haven’t set the date for the next Warbirds Downunder Airshow yet, but when we do it will be announced to our email newsletter subscribers first – so stay tuned.

Aircraft Showcase – Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation

Aircraft Showcase – Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation will take to the skies above Temora on Saturday September 3rd. The Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation was an Australian aircraft manufacturer during Word War II and the post war era. The company began as a private corporation founded by Lawrence Wackett who had been a Captain with the Australian Flying Corps and known for his engineering ingenuity. After World War I, Wackett had begun manufacturing and designing Civil Aircraft.

In the 1930′s CAC took up the license for the North American NA-16 which ultimately became the CAC Wirraway. CAC designed the Wackett and then the Boomerang fighter which was the only indigenous designed and built aircraft to see combat in WWII. The factory had a good working relationship with North American and also produced the Mustang in later years.

During WWII CAC produced two interesting prototypes which unfortunately never made it into production. The Woomera which was a three seater medium bomber that had remotely operated turrets in the rear engine nacelles and an interceptor, the CA-15 or Kangaroo, a 721 km/h fighter with a range of 4000 km’s. After the war CAC produced the CA-25 Winjeel and the CA-27 Sabre.

To celebrate and remember the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation’s contribution toAustralia’s Military Aviation we will be flying the CA-16 Wirraway,  CA-13 Boomerang and the RAAF CA-27 Sabre. Some visiting aircraft will also be joining us for the day including some CA-25 Winjeel’s.

SPITFIRE MK VIII GETS X-RAYED

08/03/2007 Filed in: Airshow | Museum | Spitfire

Preventative maintenance work was carried out on Spitfire Mk VIII (VH-HET) last week. The process involved replacing the cowling anti-chafe strips and an x-ray examination of the wing main spars. To do this, the Spitfire was placed on jacks and contractors from Non-Destructive Testing Specialists, Southern NDT were brought in. They carried out a comprehensive x-ray examination on the aircraft to detect any potential cracks and corrosion. X-rays are a favourable method, as it means the inspection is a lot less intrusive than manually inspecting the structure.

Temora Aviation Museum Chief Executive Kenny Love, Chief Pilot Darren Crabb, Engineering Supervisor Lindsay Jordan, Leading Hand Andrew Bishop and Historic Flight Club Pilot Guy Bourke travelled to Albion Park, NSW on the weekend of 24 February to participate in the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society’s (HARS) Open Day, Wings Over the Illawarra.

The Open Day attracted a large crowd with a lot of interest shown in the Museum’s Lockheed Hudson and Gloster Meteor, which were on static display for the Saturday.

OPEN DAY AT AUSTRALIAN WAR MEMORIAL

On Saturday 10 March the Australian War Memorial will be holding an Open Day, which starts at 10.00 am. 1ST FLYING WEEKEND A SUCCESS

21/02/2007 Filed in: Airshow | Hudson | Meteor

The first Flying Weekend for 2007 began with clear, warm weather resulting in a large number of visitors who were interested to see the Museum’s aircraft fly, as well as observe visiting aircraft such as the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society’s (HARS) PBY Catalina and the Helicopter Transport Services (HTS) CH-54 Sky-crane helitanker named “Shania”.

Shania was a last minute, but welcome addition to the Museum’s line-up. The Sky-crane personnel notified the Museum of its presence in the district for Rural Fire Service (RFS) training just prior to the weekend, so we were privileged they could participate.

The Catalina Flying Boat provided lots of interest also. Since its last visit to Temora, HARS have repainted its weathered coat to a shinier black. The Catalina represents an important part of Australian Aviation history when flying boats were a normal part of military and civilian travel. The aircraft is maintained in airworthy condition as a tribute to the crews that flew and maintained them.

WINGS OVER THE ILLAWARRA

Temora Aviation Museum will be involving two of its aircraft in an Air Show Open Day this weekend, Saturday 24 February 2007 at the Illawarra Regional Airport at Albion Park, NSW. Anticipated to fly across will be the Museum’s Gloster Meteor F.8 and the Lockheed Hudson. The Museum’s aircraft will be on static display however HARS will be flying some aircraft from their collection including the Catalina, Connie and the RAAF Roulettes.

If you live in the Illawarra, it would be a great time to check out the Museum’s vintage aircraft. They will be on site from Friday 23 February until Saturday afternoon 24 February.

Flying & New Employee

09/11/2006 Filed in: Airshow

The November Flying Weekend was a success with great weather and superb flying displays.

The Flying displays involved most of the Museum’s aircraft including the Tiger Moth, Ryan, Wirraway, Boomerang, Hudson, Spitfires Mk VIII & Mk XVI, Canberra, Meteor, Vampire, Dragonfly, O2-A and Tom Moon’s Extra 300s. Unfortunately, the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society’s Lockheed Neptune and C-47 Dakota were unable to visit Temora due to unsavoury weather at Albion Park, where they are situated. They plan on scheduling another visit sometime in the near future.

The Canberra City Band made an appearance on the Sunday, and played their lively music to the visitors that day. Thanks again to the band for supporting our event.

The last Flying Weekend for the year is only 3 weeks away. It falls on the 2nd and 3rd of December. So start organising your visit to Temora now!

NEW EMPLOYEE

The Museum is pleased to announce that its most recent addition to staff is Mitchell Liebich. Mitch will undertake an apprenticeship in the area of aircraft engineering. We look forward to Mitch’s help and wish him well in his chosen career
